Artifact is a bronze sculpture that came about after I watched a documentary where a tomb was opened in Egypt that was lined with over a million hawk bodies, mummified offerings to the god Horus. Each body was slightly different, cloth and clay bundles, some with the most haunting eyes. I tried to replicate the feeling I had staring into those eyes, even indirectly, with this sculpture and its resemblance to the materials used in the ancient offerings. The hawk was extincted in Egypt at that time, due to the practice of these offerings.
The Earthquake series tried to give shape to the personal earthquakes of my life and the ones that shake the ground. For each, change is inevitable and the form is weakened and aged. Each figure struggles to stand erect despite the instability beneath.
